What is a Descant (Soprano) Recorder?
Descant recorders (also known as ‘Soprano’ recorders) are the most well-known models in the recorder family and are commonly used as first instruments in schools and musical education environments due to their relatively small finger spacing and ease of playing.
They make for excellent ensemble instruments, occupying the c'' – d'''' register, as they are usually played as the highest voice in four-part ensembles.
Descant recorders, including the Aulos 703BW Haka, use the Baroque (English) fingering system, which is the most widely taught and universally accepted style.

Aulos – A Legacy of Craftmanship
Since 1954, Aulos has set the standard in recorder craftsmanship, becoming the brand of choice for music educators and students worldwide.
The name Aulos comes from ancient Greek mythology, referring to a double-reeded wind instrument. True to its origins, Aulos has become synonymous with excellence in wind instrument manufacturing.
In 1955, Aulos introduced the world’s first ABS resin recorder, selected and endorsed by Mr. Masaru Hanamura of Japan’s Ministry of Education. Since then, Aulos has led the way in innovation - continually refining materials and techniques to enhance tone, playability, and durability.
Today, Aulos recorders are played all over the world and are trusted by educators, students, and musicians for their outstanding performance and reliability. Each instrument is crafted with micron-level precision at our factory in Japan, where experienced engineers uphold the highest standards of tonal consistency and structural integrity.
Beyond recorders, Aulos also manufactures high-precision traditional instruments like the Shinobue and Flauto Traverso. Made from our proprietary resin, these instruments are acclaimed for their clarity and craftsmanship.
Every Aulos instrument reflects our commitment to musical excellence - designed to inspire, perform, and endure.
